A Kuwaiti woman sentence to hang for setting fire to her husband’s wedding tent, killing 57 women and children, has had her death sentence upheld by the Gulf state’s Supreme Court.

Nasra Yussef Mohammed Al Enezi, 24, was condemned to death by Kuwait’s lower and appeals courts for her apparent act of revenge against her husband for taking a second wife, said newswire AFP.

Under Islamic laws, men in Kuwait can take up to four wives.

Sunday’s ruling against Al Enezi is final unless the Gulf state’s Emir reduces the sentence to a life term. Death sentences in the country are carried out by hanging.

If the sentence is carried out, Al Enezi will be the first Kuwaiti woman to be hanged in the Gulf state’s history. The country’s last execution was in 2007.

Al Enezi has denied the charges throughout the trial. The August 2009 fire ripped through the women-and-children-only tent during the wedding celebrations within minutes. The final death toll included Saudi citizens and stateless women and children.
