Dubai Police has issued a warning for beach goers not to swim when red flags are erected on beaches in the emirate.
The warning comes after police rescued five people in the space of one hour within 1 hour while swimming near Burj Al Arab, despite red flags being raised.
Lt Col Juma Ahmad Butti Al Falasi, director of the Search and Rescue Department at Dubai Police, said the red flags are raised at the beaches to warn people of high waves and strong currents. He said beachgoers the red flags are expected to remain in place until Tuesday due to strong currents.
“People should avoid swimming in the rough sea until weather conditions get better, probably by next Tuesday,” said Al Falasi.
“Earlier today, the Dubai Police rescue team successfully saved five from drowning. The separate incidents, which took place near Burj Al Arab beach in Dubai, occurred within one hour (11:30am to 12:30pm).
“High wave action makes swimming difficult and can tire even a strong swimmer quickly. Structural currents can sweep you out into deeper water along the pier structure. Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure,” he added.
