Dubai ruler backs plan to build new $816m sports stadium

Sheikh Mohammed hails futuristic plans for 60,000-seater stadium which will be raised off the ground

Designs for a futuristic AED3 billion ($816 million) sports stadium to be built in Dubai have been approved by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

The 60,000 capacity Mohammed bin Rashid Stadium will be built in Al Aweer area in Dubai, news agency WAM reported.

Sheikh Mohammed inspected various models of the stadium, which will be the world’s first fully air-conditioned and raised off the ground stadium, it added.

Dar Al Handasah has been selected as consultant and Perkins + Will as the main contractor for the stadium project.

The stadium will have 60,000 seats while other facilities include a training hall, 5,000-capacity car park, a sports museum and conference halls, WAM said.

WAM added that Sheikh Mohammed applauded the design and ordered execution of the project according to the scheduled timeline, without giving a date for its completion.
