Bombardier Transportation on Wednesday said it has signed a contract to design and build an automated people mover (APM) system for Dubai International Airport.
The transit system will connect the existing Terminal 1 to the new Concourse 4. The contract is valued at approximately AED392m ($107m).
The deal has been signed with construction contractor Al Jaber Engineering and Contracting (ALEC), a statement said.
The contract is part of a massive expansion project underway at Dubai International Airport which will boost its capacity from 60 million to 90 million passengers per year by 2018.
Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects awarded local construction contractor ALEC the contract to build the new Concourse 4 in February 2012 with a build-programme of 28 months.
Germany-based Bombardier, acting as a sub-contractor, will lead the project to design and supply all of the system-wide electrical and mechanical elements of the 1.5km elevated APM system in a 24-month delivery programme.
Bombardier’s scope includes the supply of 18 INNOVIA APM 300 cars with communications-based train control (CBTC) technology for driverless operation.
Bombardier will also provide project management, systems engineering and integration, testing and commissioning.
Mohammed Sarfraaz Ali, Bombardier Transportation’s chief country representative for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, said: “The new transit system will support the Dubai International Airport in realising its ambition of becoming the world’s leading airport, not only in terms of size, but in the high quality services it provides to passengers.”
Dubai International Airport is the world’s fourth busiest airport for international passenger traffic with more than 150 airlines providing services to 220 destinations across six continents.
Following today’s announcement, Bombardier is now delivering four major projects in the Middle East, the statement added.
