Twenty-three people suffered minor injuries in four separate road incidents on the fog-shrouded Abu Dhabi to Al Ain road on Saturday morning, it was reported.
The UAE Ministry of Interior released a video on its Instagram account showing one of the incidents, which involved a 69-vehicle collision caused by dangerously foggy conditions and low visibility.
Seventeen injuries were reported in that incident alone.
Khalifa Al Khaili, deputy director of the Abu Dhabi Police traffic directorate, issued a statement saying the authorities diverted traffic temporarily until they were able to clear the road.
He was quoted in local media as saying: “The first incident took place near the roundabout of the Al Saad-Sweihan bridge and involved five vehicles.
“The second incident, which involved 69 vehicles, also took place near the Al Saad-Sweihan bridge towards Abu Dhabi.
“The third incident, involving eight vehicles, took place on the road towards Al Ain, and the fifth involved 14 vehicles.”
All those injured were taken to Tawam Hospital. Five are still receiving treatment while the rest have been discharged.
Investigations have been launched to ascertain how the incidents occurred.
Meanwhile Al Khaili urged motorists to abide by traffic rules and take extra care in foggy conditions.
