Latest stats reveal deadly week on Omani roads

Two hundred road accidents, in which 15 people died, recorded over seven days.

Oman roads experienced their most deadly week, with 200 accidents recorded in just seven days, the latest police figures reveal.

Between May 15 and May 21, a total of 15 people died and 276 were injured on the sultunate’s roads, the Times of Oman reports, citing data from the Royal Oman Police.

Of the accidents, 93 involved collisions with other vehicles, 53 with stationary objects, 25 cars flipped over and 29 were “runovers”, the paper reports.

The most serious accident involved a two car collision, which killed two people and injured three others, and was caused by speeding.

Figures from the ambulance unit of the police showed that crew attended 87 road accidents during the same period, 11 of which were serious, 48 medium and 28 were light cases, the paper reports.

Meanwhile, some 5,645 drivers were fined during the first quarter of this year for having heavily tinted windscreens. It is against the law for car windows to be tinted more than 30 percent, officials told the paper.
