Pakistan’s ex oil and gas chief arrested in UAE

Tauqir Sadiq accused of embezzling US$850m while head of regulator from 2009 to 2011

The former head of oil and gas in Pakistan has been
arrested in Abu Dhabi on suspicion of embezzling US$850m, according to media
reports.

Tauqir Sadiq is accused of receiving kickbacks and
commissions while he was chairman of Pakistan’s Oil
and Gas Regulatory Authority between 2009 and 2011.

The allegations relate to a similar
investigation against Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, who is accused
of receiving bribes paid by power companies while he was Water and Power
Minister in 2010, according to BBC News.

Both men deny the charges.

Sadiq is expected to be deported to Pakistan within days,
following legal formalities.

His passport was cancelled by the Pakistan Supreme Court
earlier this month.

The court also has ordered the arrest of Ashraf and 15
officials.
