Qatar Foundation invests in Italian hospital, research centre project

Investment arm of not-for-profit organisation teams up with the Luigi Maria Monti Foundation to develop the Mater Olbia Hospital

Qatar Foundation Endowment, an investment firm set up to fund the activities of Qatar Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation of the Gulf country’s royal family, has announced plans to build a hospital and research centre in Sardinia, Italy.

The organisation said it has teamed up with the Luigi Maria Monti Foundation to develop the Mater Olbia Hospital, a specialised hospital and medical research centre.

Following the signing for the acquisition of the site in Olbia by QFE through its European investment platform, Luigi Maria Monti Foundation and QFE plan to complete and fully fit-out the existing property, the first phase of which is scheduled to open at the end 2015.

It said the project represents a “significant financial investment” in the region, without elaborating.

Rashid Al-Naimi, CEO at QFE, said: “We are delighted that our investment received overwhelming support from the Italian authorities. This is a great investment opportunity for QFE as we firmly believe Mater Olbia Hospital will become a world-class hospital and medical research centre, benefitting patients in Sardinia and all around the world.”

Reverend Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, chairman of the Luigi Maria Monti Foundation, added: “This is a landmark investment and a vote of confidence from one of the most respected investors in the world. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with QFE.”

Mater Olbia hospital will provide care for residents of Sardinia and the wider region, with 290 new hospital beds, serving both public and private patients.

Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù, referred to as a world class hospital group, will manage the paediatric department of the hospital.

Mater Olbia Hospital will offer a wide range of services including cardiovascular, neurological, orthopaedic and paediatric specialities, as well as a rehabilitation centre.

Studies will also be conducted on certain lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, which are common to the people of both Sardinia and the Middle East.

Mater Olbia Hospital will also develop a network of strategic alliances with a variety of leading hospitals and research centres, including Sidra Hospital, a Centre of Research and Care for Women and Children in Doha, the Hamad Medical Corporation, the principal healthcare provider in Qatar, and research centres within Qatar Foundation.
