Qatar tunes up for Arab Music Festival

Gas-rich state aims to prove its credentials as cultural centre of Arab Gulf

The tiny Gulf state of Qatar is gearing up
for next week’s Arab Music Festival, which organisers say will revive the
region’s musical heritage, it was reported.

Starting on April 19 at the Qatar National
Theatre, the four-day event will pay tribute to artists such as Umm Kolthum,
Abdel Wahab, Laila Murad and Asmahan, Dr Hassan Rachid, the head of the
organising committee told the Qatar News agency.

The festival aims to relive times of Arab
musical prosperity through music and singing, Dr Rachid said.

He added that the gas-rich state’s
government is eager to showcase a variety of cultural acts that are both
creative and artistic, which will help forge Doha’s status as one of the
cultural centres of the Gulf Arab world.
