The General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) announced on Saturday a deal with Raytheon Saudi Arabia to localise a Patriot deep maintenance and refurbishment system contract for the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces.
Ground to air missile system Patriot provides defense against threats such as ballistic missiles.
GAMI’s first Industrial Participation Agreement (IPA) will also see it expand its scope of work with Raytheon Saudi Arabia by developing joint projects.
It will invest in existing local capabilities as well as develop and build new ones in line with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030, according to Gov. Ahmed Al-Ohali, which includes localising 50 percent of Saudi spending on military equipment and services in a bid to diversify the kingdom away from oil and create 40,000 jobs for nationals.
The authority aims to provide a network of services and technical support for military industries by stimulating direct foreign investment, facilitating the transfer of technology, promoting research and developing national talent.
Saudi Arabia is among the world’s top five defense spenders and one of many US allies to use Patriot.
