The Lufthansa cargo plane crash in Riyadh was caused by a bad landing, the first results of a Saudi Arabian investigation have shown.
“When landing at King Khaled International Airport, the aircraft struck the runway which destroyed the undercarriage and caused it to slide off the track. The impact caused a fire in the aircraft,” said Abel Rahman Bukhari, the
General Authority for Civil Aviation director general of safety, in a statement.
The probe is being carried out by aviation officials from Saudi Arabia, Germany and the US. The team is still collecting evidence at the site and have recovered the MD-11 aircraft’s black boxes, Bukhari told the Saudi Gazette.
The crash happened at 11.38am on July 27. The plane was carrying 80 tonnes of freight from Frankfurt in Germany to Riyadh, then Sharjah in the UAE.
The two-man crew suffered slight injuries.
