Saudi oil export giant Aramco and Formula Motorsport will use sustainable fuels in Formula 2 and Formula 3 motor racing championships from 2023.
The agreement reinforces both companies’ decarbonisation efforts to limit global warming, and is subject to approval from FIA World Motor Sport Council.
“It will form part of the wider sustainability strategy announced by the FIA and Formula 1, which will see the sport become net zero carbon by 2030,” Aramco said in a statement.

“Our sustainable fuels partnership with F2 and F3 will be an extension of these efforts, and we are extremely enthusiastic about its potential,” Aramco’s senior vice president of technical services Ahmad Al Sa’adi said.
Aramco added by 2026, all FIA Championships will be required, by regulation, to power their cars with 100 percent sustainable fuels, adding “it is working on the development of sustainable fuels as a drop-in technology.”
This means they could be rolled out to the world’s existing automotive fleet, reducing global transport emissions.
Through this collaboration, Aramco’s chief technology officer Ahmad Al-Khowaiter said, “we aim to demonstrate the significant potential of liquid synthetic fuels.”
Practical solutions are currently being explored to enable decarbornisation of the transport sector, from low-carbon fuels and more efficient engines to cutting-edge materials and carbon capture technology, Al-Khowaiter said.
