Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), owned by Saudi Arabia’s Abdul Latif Jameel, has begun construction work of a massive battery storage facility in the UK.
Along with British developer Harmony Energy, FRV announced the Clay Tye project, which is pegged to be one of the UK’s largest battery storage projects in development.
The site will be located in Essex, and will have a total power of 99 megawatts, the company said in a statement. It follows the completion of FRV’s similar projects in West Sussex and Dorset.
Clay Tye will use 52 Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries, along with Tesla’s Autobidder AI software for energy capacity exchange and project management. Megapack batteries have a capacity of 15 MWh.
“The energy transition has always been a core priority for us, and we are working hand-in-hand with the right partners to develop an energy system that is more sustainable, secure and affordable,” Fady Jameel, deputy president at Abdul Latif Jameel, said, referencing the company’s long-term approach in renewable energy investments.
The new facility will be operational by the first quarter of 2023.
