UAE to cut prices of 192 medicines by up to 60%

Move will come into effect from January 2014 and cover illnesses such as diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol

The UAE is cut the prices on some medications related to diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and viral disease by up to 60 percent from next year, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) announced it has cut the prices of 192 types of medicines by 1 to 60 percent, with effect from 1st January, 2014. The reduction will cover diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and virus disease medicines, the WAM news agency reported on Wednesday.

The move was announced in the fourth gathering for reduction of medicines and application of the pharmaceutical pricing system in the UAE, which was held this week in Dubai by the MoH and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association Gulf.

“The move comes in line with the directives by the UAE leadership to upgrade the health services through provision of easy and accessible healthcare. Earlier the Cabinet instructed the competent authorities to unify the pharmaceutical pricing system,” the report added.

Details of exact medications and how much they will be reduced by have not yet been revealed.
