The UAE Government and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have signed an agreement to establish a Red Cross office in Abu Dhabi.

The international medical aid agency’s office in the UAE will be to coordinate and contribute to relief work, reaching the needy and using modern technologies in this field.

The agreement was signed by Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, minister of state for international cooperation, and Peter Maurer, president of the international committee of the Red Cross, at the ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation in Abu Dhabi.

Al Hashemy said the UAE always sought to enhance the values of partnership and cooperation with international organisations, and provide all kinds of support to them in carrying out their relief work.

The move to set up a Red Cross office in the country was also a step in line with strengthening cooperation and partnership between the two sides, Al Hashemy said.

She said the setting up of the new office assumes significance in light of the rising challenges currently facing relief work in many regions of the world.

Maurer said the UAE was a key partner of the ICRC.

“The ICRC is proud to have the UAE as part of our donor support group, and we are committed to continuing to strengthen our partnership in providing assistance to people affected by crises,” Maurer said.
