Lorry crashes claimed the lives of 85 people in Abu Dhabi in 2018 – with 90 percent of accidents caused by people on their mobile phones while driving.
According to Captain Ahmad Al Muhairi, head of traffic safety at Abu Dhabi Police, while the lorry drivers who cause the accidents often survive, it is those they are in collision with that are killed.
“Truck drivers need to exercise a high degree of caution while driving [so as to] protect their lives and the lives of other road users, and follow road traffic rules,” he said.
He revealed that between five and 10 of these accidents happen every month.
“We have conducted more than 200 meetings so far this year with heavy truck drivers, and educated over 70,000 people about road safety norms,” he said.
Lorry drivers caught using their phones while driving will be hit with an AED800 fine and six black points.
On Sunday, motorists were warned about the dangers of playing games on mobile phones while driving, with the penalty an AED800 fine and four black points.
