Scottish giants due to kick off mid-season break in Dubai this week

Glasgow clubs Rangers and Celtic monitoring events in region

Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers are said to be monitoring events in the Middle East ahead of their respective mid-season training camps in Dubai.

Both are due in the emirate this week to train at the world-class Nad al Sheba facility, with Rangers scheduled to face Uzbekistani Super League champions, Lokomotiv Taskent at the Sevens Stadium on Saturday.

However, tensions in the region have risen considerably following the US assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.

Foreign Office advice has since urged UK nationals to leave Iran and neighbouring Iraq as soon as possible, although there has been no such warning for surrounding countries.

A Rangers spokesperson said the club will keep a close eye on Foreign Office advice. They said: “We are obviously aware of events in the Middle East and we are monitoring the situation. As a club we will heed Foreign Office advice.”

A number of players are already in Dubai ahead of the training camps. Aberdeen FC are also set to travel to the emirate on Wednesday.
