Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a major contract awarded for the Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project, following the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The project, costing AED332 million, aims to enhance the road network infrastructure to accommodate the city’s sustained growth and ensure smooth traffic flow.

Spanning 4.6 kilometres from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, the project will include various upgrades, as per a statement by the authority.

New tunnel to be built on Dubai Umm Suqeim street

In addition, an 800-meter-long tunnel will be constructed on Umm Suqeim Street, near Kings School, featuring four lanes in each direction.

Moreover, a signalised surface intersection will be built as part of the project.

According to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project is crucial for improving connectivity between east-west and north-south streets.

Al Tayer highlighted the project’s significance in complementing the RTA’s continuous efforts to enhance the corridor’s efficiency.

“This project aims to improve the connectivity of four major traffic corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road,” Al Tayer said.

“It will enhance the capacity of the streets to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, ensure a smoother flow of traffic, and significantly reduce the travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes. This project will serve various residential and developments areas, including Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills. These areas have an estimated population of about two million people,” he added.

The Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project builds upon previous completed projects in the area.

In 2013, the RTA widened Umm Suqeim Street from the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road to the intersection of Al Khail Road.

This phase involved the construction of two bridges, each with three lanes in both directions, as well as three pedestrian bridges to enhance accessibility between Al Quoz and Al Barsha.

Moreover, in 2020, the RTA opened a central 500-metre bridge as part of the Bridges and Roads leading to Dubai Hills Mall Project.

This bridge, located at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and the entrances of Dubai Hills and Al Barsha areas, boasts four lanes in each direction and has a capacity of handling up to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
