These initiatives are in line with the emirate’s efforts to become the world’s smartest city

Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has reengineered more than 50 percent of vehicle licensing services and will complete the process in the fourth quarter of this year through the ‘click and drive’ initiative, it announced in a statement on Tuesday.

The initiative, which was launched by the government entity to ensure a seamless procedure for customers to obtain a driver’s licence, achieved 92 percent of the digital transformation and reduced the average service delivery time from 20 to 5 minutes, the statement said.

The initiative also achieved high customer satisfaction, improved service delivery period, ease of using the service and enhanced accessibility.

“The digitisation of vehicle licensing services entails revamping the existing processes and designs of all licensing services and delivering them in smart packages that ensure streamlined customer procedures,” explained RTA’s director general and chairman of the board, Mattar Al Tayer.

Al Tayer added the first stage of the project showed notable results, including the transfer of vehicle ownership without visiting the service centres, thereby facilitating the service delivery and accelerating the processing time.

‘Click and Drive’ is in line with the government entity’s commitment to migrate into digital and smart platforms, in line with the emirate’s efforts to become the ‘world’s smartest city’.

Aside from this, the RTA also launched two other initiatives – smart contracts and eyesight testing vehicle.

Smart contracts will use blockchain technology in the transportation activities rental system (TARS) to issue smart car rental contracts in Dubai.

The system improved the standards of governance in the car rental business, facilitated the monitoring of operational processes, and raised the efficiency of inspection and controlled operations by automating tasks, which saved the time and effort of RTA’s inspectors, Al Tayer said, adding that it has also integrated data by linking RTA’s system to the systems of other relevant government entities and provided added services to the car rental market.

In June, RTA announced that it was the first government entity that was ready to sell data to other government and private entities, in line with the Dubai Data initiative.

The move was done to replicate other high-performing innovative entities who use data to maximise returns on investments.

The mobile eyesight testing service, currently run by Al Jaber Optical, will be expanded to include other accredited service providers.

The test, is operated in a vehicle at a time and place selected by the customer for a fee, enabling the instant renewal of the driver’s licence, the statement said.
