Sheikh Mohamed issues UAE federal law to establish National Media Office

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a federal law establishing the National Media Office on Tuesday, January 17.

Sheikh Mohamed also issued a Federal Decree appointing Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Chairman of the National Media Office, with the rank of Minister.

The Decree shall be published in the Official Gazette and is effective from the date of issuance.

The law states that the Media Office will report to the Minister of the Presidential Court and be financially and administratively independent in fulfilling its duties and mandate. The entity aims to grow the UAE’s media ecosystem and to strengthen the position of the media sector regionally and internationally.

The new entity will also enhance corporation an consolidate efforts among media stakeholders, in addition to empowering a skilled generation to lead UAE’s media industry.

The National Media Office will hold various roles and responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing national media policies, directives and strategies
  • Proposing, developing and reviewing national media laws and regulations
  • Coordinating with relevant media stakeholders to align UAE’s media vision and message, globally
  • Preparing, evaluating and reviewing UAE’s media narrative
  • Preserving and enhancing UAE’s reputation
  • Representing the country in the regional and international media
  • Participating in media conferences and events in the UAE and globally, in coordination with relevant stakeholders
