Dubai traffic: UAE announces $1.36bn plan to cut congestion

The UAE announced a 10-year future development plan for the federal road sector, valued at approximately AED5 billion.

Announced by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the plan aims to meet “the needs of the various regions of the UAE, keeping pace with the rapid growth witnessed by the country, enhancing the quality of life and building infrastructure,” the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported on Sunday.

Eng. Hassan Mohammed Juma Al Mansouri, undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for the Infrastructure and Transport Sector, confirmed that the 10-year plan will include the development of a network of arterial roads linking the regions of the country to each other, WAM said.

Al Mansouri added that the ministry is currently seeing to projects that are underway to develop and raise the efficiency of federal roads at a value of AED500 million.

Through the plan, Al Mansouri added that the nation aims to be a global leader in achieving the highest efficiency of the road and transport system through the development and expansion the current federal road network of bridges, tunnels and road networks.

“The various emirates of the country are in accordance with the highest international standards to ensure safe, smooth and sustainable mobility in cooperation and coordination with partners in the field of transport and roads in the country, in addition to strengthening them with all the necessary services to support electric vehicles and the smart mobility system, especially for self-driving vehicles,” WAM said.

Al Mansouri explained that road projects are one of the paths of the new development model of the state, which is at the forefront of development projects during the next fifty years and the main engine for all axes of sustainable development.

An increase in rates of capacity for roads, flow of the road are among the most important priorities of the UAE, in the context of keeping pace with the rapid developments in various sectors, Al Mansouri said, adding that through the plan, achieving the happiness and support of residents and citizen, remain priority.
