The UAE National Service and Reserve Authority (NSR) has permanently exempted only sons of either parents from military service, under the provisions of Federal Law No. (6) of 2014.
The announcement was made via NSR’s social media accounts on Monday.
Emiratis with female siblings will not be considered as “only son” provide that this is proven in the official papers from the competent authority in the state, the authority said.
The NSR added that “those who wish to join national service can do so if they meet other conditions set by the law and related decisions. They must complete the full-service period, however, they will not be summoned to fight in the frontlines.”
Emiratis exempted from UAE national service
Emiratis are exempt from military service if:
- they are the only son of a family and medically unfit citizens can be exempt from military service.
- they support their parents or siblings with special needs, or are serving jail time, will receive a temporary exemption. Once temporary exemption is over, they will have to report to the authorities to undergo military service.
Aside from this, working Emiratis are not exempt from serving in the military. On being enrolled for the national service, time will be added to their pension and end-of-service benefits.
All federal and local departments, and businesses in the private sector must allow their Emirati employees to enlist for military service. Following the completion of their national service, companies must keep their jobs or jobs with similar roles open.
The positions of Emirati employees can be filled on a temporary basis until their return.

Emiratis failing to enlist for UAE national service
Emiratis who fail to enlist for military service without a valid reason, once they reach the age of 29 will face jail time of one month to a year. They can also face a fine ranging between AED10,000 and AED50,000 or both.
UAE citizens must undergo military service even if they are over 30 years of age.
Emiratis postponing UAE national service
The UAE national service can be postponed only if a person:
- is less than 29 years old and is enrolled in a university, college, institution or a training centre, for a course the duration of which is two years or more.
- has obtained a minimum of 90 percent grade average or better in their General Certificate of Secondary Education.
- is reaching 18 years old and has not completed secondary education, provided the person is continuing morning classes education.
Aside from this, the national service term for male recruits, who hold a high school diploma or its equivalent and above has been shortened to 11 months.
For those who haven’t finished their high school, the term will be three years, according to a statement by the Ministry of Defence.
The national service duration for female recruits will be 11 months.
