UAE announces new Abu Dhabi bridge, slashes travel time

The state-of-the-art project will reduce travel time from 11 minutes to three minutes

Abu Dhabi inaugurated a new bridge that will cut travel time from 11 minutes to three minutes. The bridge will link Bani Yas East and Bani Yas West.

The new bridge was inaugurated by Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), Ali Al Shorafa. The inauguration ceremony was attended by various Director Generals, executives and officials.

Located on Abu Dhabi Al Ain Road (E22), the highway will improve traffic from Bani Yas to other areas in the city, with travel time set to be slashed by more than half.

The bridge will be able to accommodate over 1,400 vehicles per hour traveling from E22 and 1,100 vehicles from East or West Baniyas.

The project will feature the construction of the upper intersection linking East and West Bani Yas as well as associated roads. The East Bani Yas roundabout will be constructed into a light signal intersection, as well as the construction of pedestrian ramps.

The project also included the demolition of existing pedestrian tunnels, transport and protection of water and communication lines, irrigation lines and sewage lines.

Salem Khalfan Al Kaabi stated, “The new bridge in Abu Dhabi marks a significant milestone for Abu Dhabi, connecting communities and providing improved accessibility for residents and visitors alike. Its innovative design and state-of-the-art features demonstrate Abu Dhabi’s commitment to modernity and progress, while also enhancing the city’s infrastructure and promoting economic growth.

Saif Badr Al Qubaisi, Director General of Abu Dhabi City Municipality confirmed that the new bridge is a crucial part of the city’s strategic plans aimed at enhancing the infrastructure system to accommodate the increase in population and motorists.

Additionally, the bridge will boost economic growth and improved traffic flow while adhering to safety standards.

The construction will consist of CCTV systems, traffic lights, pedestrian signs, fibre optic cables and speed camera transmissions. The interchange will feature 210 energy-saving poles.

During the project, the Abu Dhabi City Municipality will observe conditions of sustainability, high international standards and applying best practices.
