UAE Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque sees 70 percent increase in visitors in 2023

The record visitation highlights the mosque’s prominent role as a beacon of peace and cross-cultural awareness for people around the globe

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi welcomed 5.5 million worshippers and visitors last year, reflecting a 70 percent rise compared to 2022.

Visitation numbers to the mosque reached a new record in 2023, with 5,501,420 people touring the iconic site.

Worshippers accounted for 1,409,947 of these, with 619,664 performing daily prayers and 310,609 Friday prayers. Additionally, 434,719 people prayed during Ramadan and Eid.

UAE Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque sees international visitors

General visitors to the mosque totalled 4,033,552. Additionally, 57,921 people enjoyed exercising on the mosque’s jogging track.

Most visitors came from outside the UAE, accounting for 81 percent or 4.4 million people. Visitors from within the country made up the remaining 19 percent or 1.1 million.

Asia was the top region for international visitors, with 52 percent or 2.3 million people. Europe saw 33 percent or 1.4 million visitors, followed by North America with 8 percent or 357,312 people.

The mosque launched several new initiatives in 2023 to enhance the visitor experience, including a virtual reality guided tour called “El-Daleel” and evening cultural tours offering late visits.

A number of exhibitions were also held exploring Islamic art and history.

Continued investment in accessibility ensured worshippers and visitors of all backgrounds could freely explore the mosque. Volunteers and electric vehicles provide assistance as needed.
