Sharjah to host largest skateboarding event in the Middle East

The Park 2022 World Championships and Street 2022 World Championships will be held between January 29 and February 12

World Skate has confirmed that two qualifying events for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will be held in Sharjah, at the Aljada Skate Park.

The Park 2022 World Championships and Street 2022 World Championships will be will take place between January 29 and February 5. Both events are organised by World Skate and Arada, these events will help cement Sharjah’s position as a new regional hub for the sport.
For the first time ever, the Middle East is host to a pro-skating event of this scale, the World Championships are now added to the list of sporting events that have taken place in region recently.

“These events mark another piece of sporting history for Sharjah, and once again showcase the UAE’s position as a hugely attractive destination for a huge range of sports from around the world. Skateboarding is one of the fastest-growing sports globally and having built the best skate park in the region, we’re very excited at the opportunity to see the world’s best skaters to put it through its paces,” said Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal, Vice Chairman of Arada.

“As a truly global sport, we’re delighted to bring skating events of this stature to the Middle East for the first time, and in particular to see Sharjah play such an important role on the road to Paris 2024. The popularity of skating has really taken off in the region in recent years, and these two World Championship qualifiers offer skaters the chance to enjoy an impressive new skate park, while allowing local fans the opportunity to see the world’s top professionals up close,” said Sabatino Aracu, President of World Skate.

Over 300 professional skateboarders from around the world will attend including Australia’s Keegan Palmer, Brazil’s Pedro Barros, the United States’ Cory Juneau, Japan’s Sakura Yosuzumi and Kokona Hiraki and the UK’s Sky Brown, to compete for points that will allow them to qualify for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Aljada Skate Park is located in Sharjah’s largest project, Aljada urban district, developed by Arada. The park spans a 90,000 square foot area, consists of six separate parks, Olympic-level street course, snake runs and beginner level spaces.

The park is currently open to the public until January 15 which is when the preparations for the Olympic qualifier events begin.
