A German diplomat assigned to the consulate general in Dubai has been arrested in Berlin over claims he was involved in human trafficking, it was reported on Tuesday.

The unidentified 40-year-old head of the visa section of the German diplomatic mission in Dubai is accused in at least eight cases of helping to smuggle people from Afghanistan via Dubai to Germany.

A public prosecutor in Germany confirmed a report in the newspaper the Berliner Morgenpost, the DPA news agency in Germany reported.

Last December, Germany's foreign ministry was reportedly rocked by a major bribes-for-visas scandal, Iran's Islamic Republic News Agency said.

Several German embassies were suspected of having accepted bribes from human trafficking rings in exchange of issuing visas, it added.
