GIBTM survey to fill data void

Barnett: lack of industry data to be resolved by 2008 survey.

GIBTM organiser Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) is preparing to launch the second GIBTM Industry Research survey to collect data about the region's meetings industry.

"The challenge we have is to get more data from participants in the region," said Graeme Barnett, exhibition director, GIBTM & CIBTM, meetings & incentives events, RTE.

One problem here is the provision of data.

"The results will provide us with trend data and provide insight into the growth and development of the outbound meetings industry but also the view of the international planner on the Middle East as a destination."

As well as providing regional business with information about the industry, the survey would act as a selling tool for the region in the eyes of international planners, he explained.

"International participants need proof that there is business outbound from the Middle East," Barnett said.

"One problem here is the provision of data. There is a cultural challenge that we have to over come, which is to get people in corporates and governments to actually understand that the research that we require as an organiser will also benefit them in the long term."

The online survey will run for around two weeks following its launch in the second week of February and the findings will be presented at GIBTM, which will take place from April 8-10 in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre (ADNEC).
