Going the XTra yard in production

Publishers: visit Apple in Hall 4 and your could save hours in production!

Visit the Apple stand in Hall 4 and you'll find the fruits of more than one company's labour. Among the Zip drives and the PowerMacs, Layout is showing off its new DTP friendly software; PrintXPORT XT and PrintXPORT Manager. Both are designed to take the hassle out of magazine production — and save the need for yellow stickies! One highlight of the software — which serves as an extension to QuarkXPress (look out for the free demo version on the stand by the way!) and displays e-reports on your DTP documents. For example, a tag will link to a Quark file where an image — possibly an advert or a JPEG — is to be inserted. The tag will specify details such as the source of the picture, when it is due, where it will come from and who is in charge of obtaining it. Additionally, a time tracker device will give you a breakdown of who has worked on sourcing the image, and how long for. Using the manager means that a production department will not need to have full Quark software, but will be able to check an overview of the document status using the tags. Joe Abi Raad, Layout assistant general manager, said: “The XT software is designed to save on admin in the production process. It should cost something like $2,500 for the browser and the Manager, and multi-user licences will be available.”
