Google powers up

Search engine Google has revealed plans to develop a solar-powered electricity system at its Silicon Valley headquarters.

The system will be the largest solar electric system at a corporate site.

The search engine, which this month hit the headlines for its acquisition of website YouTube, has said it plans to begin building a rooftop solar-powered generation system at its California headquarters.

The system will be capable of generating 1.6 megawatts of electricity the company said, enough to supply nearly a third of the electricity consumed by office workers at the headquarters.

Most of the solar panels, a large number of which will be supplied by Sharp Electronics, will be placed on the rooftops of office buildings at the site.

Google rival Microsoft also has a solar electric system at its California research site.
