Google warns users about malware

Google is warning users around the world about which websites host spyware or other malicious software.

Google is warning users around the world about which websites host spyware or other malicious software.

Users of Google’s popular search engine users now see a warning when clicking on a suspect website, as identified as malicious by the Stop Badware coalition. The warning will be displayed on a special page, with users then having the option of returning back to their search results page or continuing to the website in question.

Lenovo, Google and Sun Microsystems created the Stop Badware coalition in January of this year to help identify dangerous software and websites that try to trap online users into installing it.

According to Google, its warnings will simply alert users of the potential dangers of visiting particular websites. Eventually its alert pages will however contain detailed reports.

According to a research report released in May 2006, sponsored by McAfee SiteAdvisor, dangerous sites have recently exploded and now account for as much as 72% of the results returned by keywords searches. McAfee claimed that dangerous keywords include: ‘free screensavers’, ‘bearshare’, ‘kazaa’, ‘download music’, and ‘free games’. McAfee also revealed that sponsored results contained two to four times as many dangerous sites as organic results. To read the full report, click here
