The trending keto diet is a low-carb, moderate protein and high-fat diet that allows for fast weight loss
When Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties and founder of Noon.com, said last year that the days of 9-5 working hours are over as the business world adapts to a new 24/7 environment, all we could think of was: we are doomed.
Who wants to work 24/7? You might be the world’s most passionate employee but the fact of the matter is: our bodies need rest. In fact, not only does lack of rest lead to more stress, it also leads to a slower metabolism and higher carbs and sugar cravings. We’ve been one of the unlucky ones to have experienced that (our waistline being the biggest victim).
Skipping breaking, overdosing on coffee and tea, consuming a carbs-heavy lunch, binging on sugar: that’s what a day in our office lives looks like.
The solution? Working less is certainly not an option. Alabbar has a point. So we tried what anyone looking to lose weight would try: an extreme diet.
We opted for the trending keto diet which is a low-carb, moderate protein and high-fat diet that allows for fast weight loss but also has benefits against cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and diabetes, which is heavily widespread in the UAE. The reduction of carbs puts your body in a metabolic state (known as ketosis) and intensely increases the burning of fat for energy, hence the weight loss.
But the idea of having only 20g of carbs a day and counting our fat intake did not fare well with us. How would we know how many grams of carbs are in a meal? How much time would it take us to research it? Would we have to cook our own keto-friendly food? If we’re working 24/7, how could we possibly sustain a healthy and strict diet? One of the ways that worked for us was simply (and surprisingly): food delivery. We’re no longer living in a world where food orders are a hassle to make and take 45 minutes to deliver. We live in a world where food delivery is competing with actual F&B outlets.
Why dine out and pay a hefty price when you can dine in and pay less? But that’s another review for another day. We opted for $2 billion global firm Deliveroo because it not only boasts thousands of restaurants and cafes on its platform, but a good number of them specify the amount of carbs, protein and fat in each meal. Our favourites are Krave, Balance, Nutri Bowl, Go! Healthy and Beast Mode Nutrition. Deliveroo is also known for its speedy deliveries (averaging less than 30 minutes per delivery) and tracking feature which shares updates from the start of the meal’s preparation to the location of the delivery driver.
But what surprised us the most about our keto journey is that it actually saved us money. Because the meals are high in fat, they’re quite fulfilling, even in small portions, which resulted massively in reduced hunger and a curb in our appetite.
So at the end of 20 days of keto, we were spending less on food (smaller portions), without the stress or hassle of cooking (Deliveroo), and the joy of losing 3.5 kilograms with the least, possible effort. We might not be doomed after all.For all the latest gourmet news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
