Council will launch a green building rating system specific to the region.
Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) will use the FM Expo as a platform to inform people about its new rating system for green buildings.
The system, which will be based on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system developed by the United States Green Building Council, is due to be rolled out in the next few months.
Dr Sadek Owainati, chairman of EmiratesGBS, said: "The rating system being developed by the EmiratesGBC will enable buyers, leasers and renters to know that the building has been designed and built to achieve certain standards of efficiency and sustainability.
"This means lower operating and maintenance costs and an enhanced internal environment for the occupants. It will also enable those of us that care about the environment to make informed choices about the buildings or apartments that we want to purchase or occupy."
The decision to create a UAE specific rating system comes as sustainable and energy efficient buildings are creating serious discussion and debate among the region's developers.
Local climate and culture is a factor that will help determine the a considering factor and the system will set a range of benchmarks, including the reduction of energy usage and water consumption.
"This is a long overdue initiative to have a local body that would pioneer the process and establish benchmarks of green buildings in the Middle East, taking into consideration the local environmental conditions and the types of buildings that are currently being built," explains Dilip Rahulan, chairman and CEO of founding member, Pacific Controls.
"The initiative is going to create a new dimension for architects, engineers, contractors and service providers to establish the systems and processes that will comply with the standards for sustainable development."
