Green charger creates power from motion

New device harnesses movements to power cell phones and other small gadgets.

A new charging device, developed by M2E Power based in Idaho, uses motion to power cell phones and other small gadgets.

For every six hours of cumulative motion (walking, driving, etc.), the M2E charger can generate between 30-60 minutes of talk time.

Despite initial assumptions that the device is geared towards more fitness-minded people, the charger can even be placed inside a woman’s purse, backpack or even a car to achieve the results. It works by harvesting motion-producing electromagnetic fields, which is converted into clean electric energy and stored for use in mobile devices.

At a cost of $25 – 40, the green device could make a notable difference in the mobile industry where more than 3 billion cell phones are currently powered by batteries that need to be electrically recharged.

“This is our first commercial application – the world’s only external charger that generates its own electricity by converting the energy of normal everyday motion,” said David Rowe, president of M2E Power.

“We have received interest from 127 countries so far, including several countries in the Middle East. We hope that our commercial partner distributes globally but that hasn’t been finalized yet,” Justin Hall, a company spokesperson confirmed to ITP.net

“Ultimately we hope that people will start to think about energy differently. If you can walk around and power your mobile devices then what else is possible. It will take all of us working together to live sustainably. We hope that M2E is a good step in that direction.”
