Green meetings revolution fuelled by planner demand

Properties in the UK are having to highlight their green credentials to attract meetings business.

Properties in the UK are having to highlight their green credentials to attract meetings business.

Following a customer research programme, Exclusive Hotels established the "need to go green" was a top priority for planners, according to general manager, Lainston House Hotel Exclusive Hotels, Cliff Hasler.

"Clients started talking about green and anything on our clients' radars comes onto ours," Hasler said.

In order to cater to the demand, Exclusive Hotels began offering carbon neutral conferencing costing the client £0.35 (US $0.65) per 24-hour delegate and the move has paid off, according to Hasler.

"It's been very well received and the companies we work with love being able to state they can offer carbon neutral conferencing if they use our company," he said.

Green changes included notepads made of old tyres, pencils made of used CD cases and "growing 40% of the vegetables cooked at the hotel" Hasler said.

"We've now got bees to make our own honey and livestock for our kitchens - these are fresh things that are happening that guests can see," he added.

However, Hasler said that changes the hotel group had made would probably be mandatory in the near future.

"I do believe strongly that if we don't do anything about it off of our own backs, a few years down the line we will be told to do it anyway."
