With 2,200 trade exhibitors and about 40,000 visitors from across the world, Gulfood 2007, which took place on Febrruary 19 - 22 at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, built firmly on the success of the previous year's edition.

The exhibition, which is the largest gathering of professionals involved in the FMCG sector in the Middle East, was inaugurated by HH Sheikh Hasher Al Maktoum, director general of Dubai Information Department.

Following the ribbon cutting, His Highness toured the exhibition halls, which covered a total of 50,000 sq m, representing a 40% growth on last year's show. Since its inception 20 years ago, Gulfood has become a cornerstone event for the food and hospitality industries, with visitors attending from food and beverage, hotel, retail, catering, as well as the equipment and technology sectors. "As well as fulfilling the demands of the region, the food industries provide employment opportunities, generate revenue and help attract tourism and new business," said Helal Saeed Al Marri, director general of Dubai World Trade Centre. "The awards we present today recognise the major role that our sponsors have played in these areas, as well as thanking them for their ongoing support for the Gulfood exhibition.

"We are anticipating high numbers of visitors at Gulfood 2007, given the overwhelming interest we've received in recent months from major hotel groups and trade buyers," he added.

"The event is one of the most comprehensive in the world and will undoubtedly continue to provide an essential platform for business development for exhibitors and visitors."

Fadi Amoudi, general manager, American Fine Food Corporation, said: "We have never missed an edition of Gulfood, because of the continuous growth in sales, profits and increasing number of potential customers it delivers."

Meanwhile, Micheal Power, Irish Dairy Board's regional sales manager for Europe, Russia, CIS and the Gulf, said he had already had some interesting meetings early on during the show.

Gulfood 2007 attracted some of the leading players in the region's FMCG sector, included Al Wazzan Group, Cargill, Emirates Kitchen, GIGA Grande, IFFCO, and Kerry Gold. It also features the Tea Board of India, as well as the country pavilions from Germany, USA and Egypt.
