Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) and Sun Microsystems showed impressive growth in the external disk storage market during the second quarter with both vendors’ revenues increasing by over 15% from the same period last year, according to market research firm IDC.
In the external disk storage market HDS saw its revenue increase 17% to US$332million in Q206 and in the overall disk storage market by 16.7% to US$340million, IDC figures revealed.
Sun increased its revenue by 19% in the worldwide external disk storage market to US$295million and by 13.4% in the overall worldwide disk storage market to US$391million.
The growth experienced by Sun and HDS, ranked four and five respectively in the overall market, was more than double that of the total market, which grew 6% from Q205 to US$5.9 billion.
The worldwide external disk storage market grew 8.5% in the second quarter to US$4.2 billion, the 13th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth.
“Disk storage systems vendors have invested heavily to expand their product offerings — most of the major vendors now have systems to address a wide range of application, capacity, and performancerequirements,” said Brad Nisbet, program manager at IDC Storage Systems.
“As such, the disk storage systems market as a whole is well-poised to satisfy the expected data growth associated with an expanding set of customer needs,” Nisbet went on to add.
EMC edged out HP in Q206 with revenue of US$830million compared to HP’s US$800million. However, HP saw revenue growth of 10.3% — over three times that of EMC.
HP also experienced solid growth in the overall storage market of 9.2% with revenues of US$1.4 billion and comfortably held onto the top spot in the market, with IBM in second and EMC in third place.
“The latest IDC results are a strong indicator of the positive steps that HP has taken over the last year to strengthen its storage business and aggressively compete in the storage market,” said Bob Schultz, senior vice president and general manager of the StorageWorks Division at HP.
“We are making steady progress and are committed to delivering simplicity, agility and value to our customers and partners with innovative storage systems,’ he added. For all the latest tech news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
