Healthcare costs beat inflation

Healthcare costs in the UAE are overtaking the rate of inflation, an industry analyst has said.

Healthcare costs in the UAE are overtaking the rate of inflation, an industry analyst has said.

Stephen Baker, the general manager of Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), said rocketing care costs are a result of poor preventive care among residents.

"Individuals have not yet established the value of early detection on both the pocket and most-importantly on lifestyle," said Baker.

"Early detection saves lives and helps reduce healthcare costs by reducing the need for many complicated and invasive therapies throughout life."

Analysts are questioning how much more the UAE can afford to spend on its medical care, Baker said, adding that more needs to be done in terms of prevention.

"The only way to avoid spending unnecessary money on healthcare is by preventing disease in the first place."
