A luxury hotel in Ras Al Khaimah is to be expanded into a 701-room resort with floor space increasing by 44 percent amid growing demand from tourists, it has been announced.

Al Marjan Island company said that work on the expansion of DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Marjan Island is "progressing rapidly".

The underground construction, including excavations and earthworks, and basement and substructure has been completed, following the purchase of an additional 253,577 square feet of land to execute the plan.

The expansion is over 20 percent complete, according to a joint statement by AMI and DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Marjan Island.

The global hotel brand said the expansion was in response to the growing interest in Al Marjan Island as a vacation destination among residents as well as regional and international tourists.

Abdullah Rashed Al Abdooli, managing director of AMI Company said: "It is a matter of pride that DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Marjan Island is undergoing this significant expansion at AMI before completing its first year of operation.

"This reflects the resort's vote of confidence which highly motivates us to continue to offer an ideal investment ambience to our business partners and tenants."

With the new expansion, the hotel will add 216 rooms to the current capacity of 485 rooms.

Al Marjan Island is the first man-made island in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. Extending 4.5km into the sea, the island covers an area of 2.7 million square metres.
