Hotel design and its associated specialities - food and beverage, spa and guest room design - has provided a great boon to interior designers working in the Gulf region.

Growth rates that are hard to comprehend have fired an industry into a frenzy of fit outs and demand for additional hotel space continues on, seemingly unabated.

This hospitality activity has obviously kept local and international interior designers busy, but it has also had a hothouse affect on design trends. Why? Well it's the constant quest for differentiation that's the key.

With so many hotels and all their requisite on-site venues emerging in a steady stream, proprietors are constantly on the lookout for things that will set them apart from the rest of the market, or at least their segment of it.

It is the designer's job to achieve this distinction, whatever way possible. Sometimes the location helps the job along, but mostly it's up to the vision of the design team to make all the difference.

The result for the region is fast paced evolution in hospitality design styles and greater attention being paid to the latest trends and fashions.

All of this comes into focus in this edition of CID where we take a look at a selection of spaces in one of the newest hotels to open in the region, the Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina.

Guest rooms are also put under the microscope as we talk to a selection of top designers about how to develop the best room designs. We also get a fresh perspective on contemporary room design from a hotel-industry expert, Chris Jackson.

He calls for designers and hoteliers to remember some basics about the realities of travel when it comes time to room planning.

With so many hotels on the drawing board, partly built or just about to open, the local hothouse of design will have to continue to produce more original ideas for some time to come.
