US defence giant Raytheon eyes growing ties with UAE's EDGE

Raytheon is working with UAE authorities to help localise the country's defence industry

US defence giant Raytheon eyes growing ties with UAE's EDGE

Dealing with one entity – as opposed to 25 – will help both Raytheon and its Emirati partners be more streamlined and efficient, said Alan Davis, the chief executive of Raytheon Emirates.

US defence contractor Raytheon is eying opportunities to ramp up its relationship with the UAE’s newly formed EDGE defence giant as it works to build local talent and develop advanced technologies, according to Alan Davis, the chief executive of Raytheon Emirates.

EDGE – which was announced several weeks ago - will put 25 companies, including businesses that were once under Emirates Defence Industries Co, under its umbrella.

“We’re very excited about the launch of EDGE. We [already] have partnerships with many of the companies that are a part of it,” Davis said on the sidelines of the Dubai Airshow on Sunday.

“We see the EDGE entity as being a ‘pull signal’ for many of the systems and solutions we would like to bring to the UAE.

“If you look at their goals of wanting to accelerate technology solutions…it’s very similar to our goals of accelerating change and addressing market conditions and threats. We’re working very collaboratively with them. We’ve held several meetings with them and will continue to evolve that relationship.”

Streamlined

Dealing with one entity – as opposed to 25 – will help both Raytheon and its Emirati partners be more streamlined and efficient, Davis added.

To help the UAE localise its defence industry, Davis said that Raytheon is increasingly hiring Emiratis and plans to expand its internship programme, which he said has so far exceeded company expectations.

“We’re seeing very talented, committed pool of local talent to draw from, and that’s exciting for us,” he added. “As our company grows, we’re going to be able to develop and grow technical and community leaders as a part of our programme.”

While Raytheon as a corporation as been present in the UAE for over 30 years, Raytheon Emirates as a separate entity began operations approximately one and a half years ago.
