The Islamic Development Bank, along with the LLF Foundation and the Government of Benin, announced the launch of an integrated agricultural value chain project to develop local and regional market opportunities for farmers in Benin.

The project, launched with an outlay of $20 million, will work with local farming communities, the private sector and other stakeholders to develop local and regional market opportunities for 25,000 households in 16,000 municipalities, in the Collins District of Dassa, Benin Republic, over the next five years.

The project aims to improve the competitiveness of the corn and rice value chains in a sustainable manner, and raise rice productivity.

The new initiative is to protect against poverty, hunger and food insecurity, while ensuring that more tangible gains are achieved in increasing the annual income of beneficiary families and creating new job opportunities in agricultural and non-agricultural industries in the country.

In addition to creating 650 hectares of irrigated land with an effective water management system, rehabilitating 50 kilometers of access roads and reducing post-harvest losses from 30 percent to 10 percent.

The project will work alongside local agencies to train 3,000 women and youth farmers and enable them to keep pace with the information needs of the systems.

The Islamic Development Bank, through the Lives and Livelihood Fund and its partners, plays a major role in translating the achievements of agricultural transformation in member countries.
