The Burj Dubai is now the second tallest building in the world, its developer Emaar Properties announced today.
The colossal 130-storey structure now stands at 468.1 metres, second only to Taiwan’s Taipei 101 tower.
However, the Burj Dubai only has 3.9 metres to go before claiming the coveted title of world’s tallest building.
The Burj is already taller than Petronas Towers in Malaysia and Chicago’s famous Sears Tower.
“This is another proud moment for Dubai as the city’s iconic tower continues to scale its way upward to become the tallest building in the world,” said Mohamed Ali Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties.
The final height of the Burj is still a closely guarded secret, but as ArabianBusiness.com revealed in January, it is thought that it will stand at 166 storeys high, topped with a 30-metre spire. This would make it over 606 metres upon completion.
The Burj already holds the world record for having more floors than any other building.
When completed, the tower will be the tallest building in the world in all four categories recognised by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which ranks buildings on the basis of spire height, the highest occupied floor, roof height and pinnacle height.
