Drake & Scull Water and Power will continue to establish its presence in Saudi Arabia with a AED290m contract to construct a district cooling plant in Riyadh.

“We are confident that our past technical and operational knowledge in the field, a strong portfolio of prominent projects which includes two of the world’s largest district cooling plants located in Dubai, and our understanding of the complex Saudi market dynamics will support us in achieving success in the Kingdom,” said DSWP’s executive director, Tawfiq Abu Soud.

DSWP’s parent company, Drake and Scull International, is well-established in Saudi, with its projects in the country accounting for 29 percent of the company’s total backlog.

DSI CEO  Khaldoun Tabari said his group aimed to “increase the figure to 50 percent by 2011 by continuing to focus our efforts and resources on the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) division and in the Kingdom’s water and power industry, which has proved to be highly lucrative.”

The new project will help towards that goal. DSWP will be responsible for the style and build of the plant, which will have a capacity of 35,000 tonnes.  It will also be required to operate and maintain the site for a full ten years after its completion.

Design and construction stages are scheduled to begin immediately, with completion expected in 18 months. It will be a flagship project for UAE-based DSWP, established in January of this year.

DSI, which engineers projects throughout the Middle East and North Africa, has offices in Dubai, Jordan, Libya, Thailand and Oman with projects in Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Thailand and Oman.
