Fluor Corporation, a multinational project management and engineering business, has landed a $1 billion contract from Saudi International Petrochemical Company (SIPchem) to work on the development of a major chemical and plastics production plant in Jubail on the east coast of Saudi Arabia.
Flour will provide engineering, procurement, construction management and pre-commissioning services for the development that will manufacture acetic acid and vinyl acetate monomer, a high-end specialty plastic.
Construction began this month with a target completion of December 2008. A Flour statement says that up to 650 of its employees will be working on the project.
“With this project, Fluor continues a long history of work with Saudi International Petrochemical,” said David Seaton, Fluor’s Energy & Chemicals group president. “We are honoured by SIPchem’s selection of us for such a large-scale and important development.”
