Renewable energy solutions have been installed at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai in an aim to increase the sustainability of the building and reduce the overall energy use and running costs.
A combination of solar power, treated sewage effluent and a chemical-free cooling tower treatment have been installed, with a target 15% reduction in water and electricity use. The hotel currently uses about 149 million MJ/y of electricity and 348,000m3/y of water.
The hotel’s main water heating system has been converted from diesel-fired to solar powered. Grand Hyatt engineering director Philip Barnett commented: “We operated by using diesel-fired boilers to heat a primary circuit to 80°C…I tested the possibility of using solar as the heat source and found a workable solution.”
The installation of a chemical-free cooling tower treatment has reduced the chiller power consumption by 20-30%. While a treated sewage effluent (TSE) plant to supply water to the hotel’s cooling towers is saving more than 3,600m3/week of potable water.
