Saudi Arabia’s Al Mabani Company has won a US $240.77 million (SR902.91 million) contract to develop and upgrade aviation facilities at Jeddah’s King Abdul Aziz International Airport.

According to a statement by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), this is the first contract awarded as part of the Saudi Arabian government’s $4.8 billion plan to increase the airport’s annual capacity to 80 million passengers.

The 36-month contract covers an expansion of the airport’s tarmac and runways as well as the construction of a new aircraft parking facility west of the Hajj Terminal, the modernisation of ground lights systems and IT infrastructure.

Once completed, the airport will be able to accommodate large jumbo jets, including the Airbus A380.

Four new terminal buildings and a high-speed rail link are planned for the new airport. Construction is expected to take place in three stages, the first of which could be completed in five years.
