Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has been given the green light to to set up sea port facilities in Abu Helaifa after overcoming previous objections from local authorities.
Kuwait City Municipality administrator Abdullah al-Naumis said the authority had granted permission for facilities to be built in a 28,300 sq m area.
KOC had previously had a similar request rejected last May for a number of environmental considerations, as the area is close to a natural habitat, he added in comments published by KUNA News Agency.
KOC re-evaluated the impact of its port project, taking into account the Municipality reservations.
The port will be built about 300 metres from the shore onto the sea and will stretch about 140 metres along the shore line, but KOC will leave a buffer zone between its facilities and any residential area stretching for at least 30 metres.
