Nakheel has launched a joint venture project with Thailand’s Amburaya Hotels & Resorts to develop a resort on the Asian country’s Koh Samui Island, it announced on Thursday.

Once complete in 2010, the W Koh Samui Retreat & Residences will be among the first residential projects in Asia managed by US firm W Hotels.

“In selecting hotel assets to invest in we look for assets with high real estate value in exceptional locations,” said Joe Sita, CEO of Nakheel Hotels.

The residential project will comprise of three, four and five-bedroom villas with owners able to use all hotel facilities and services at the adjacent retreat, also managed by W Hotels.

With a global portfolio valued at over $4bn, Nakheel Hotels is a subsidiary of Nakheel, which is part of Dubai government holding company Dubai World.
