Mobile maintenance units powered by an onboard Atlas Copco portable air compressor and generator are being manufactured by an Indonesian company to service the wide variety of heavy-duty earth-moving and mining equipment used by its clients throughout the country.
PT Sanggar Sarana Baja – whose transport equipment division is better known as SSB Transporter – manufactures all types of trailers, lube service bodies, fuel tankers, dump trucks, special custom built support vehicles and off-highway bus bodies for the mining, oil and gas, general transport, forestry and agriculture, and marine industrial sectors.
SSB Transporter manufacturing manager, John Schwarzenberg, said that the self-contained mobile maintenance units were initially designed and built for a number of clients a few years ago, and that their popularity had taken off from there.
“We began to make them because we had some direct enquiries, and now we have incorporated them into our product range,” he said.
“There are currently about 50 of these units working throughout the Indonesian archipelago, all the way from the western tip of Sumatra to Irian Jaya.
“The units are usually working in very tough and remote locations, servicing vehicles that themselves are working hard under the most demanding of conditions, and we design and build them so that they can handle all maintenance needs on site, no matter where the client’s vehicle fleet is operating.”
Schwarzenberg also said that the mobile units are equipped to carry out all regular maintenance work from welding repairs to oil and water change, refuelling, and even body and wheel washing. And so successful has the mobile maintenance concept proved, that the company is currently ordering approximately 20 Atlas Copco portable units each year for installation on the vehicles. He also suggested that the figure is likely to increase because SSB Transporter’s volume of business is also increasing fast.
PT Sanggar Sarana Baja was established in Jakarta in 1977 and is one of the leading suppliers of fabricated steel products in Indonesia. SSB is a subsidiary of the Trakindo Group, one of the country’s largest industrial conglomerates.
