Master developer Nakheel has contracted international architecture practice RMJM to masterplan the million square metre Madinat Al Soor mixed use development at Dubai Waterfront.
Staff from RMJM’s New York and Dubai offices will work on the project, which is expected to house around 20,000 people.
Peter Schubert, RMJM’s New York-based design director said the masterplan would make significant use of traditional Arabic town planning techniques and include various open spaces.
“Central to our approach is the equal attention given to both the design of buildings and the design of open spaces – streets, plazas, bridges, gardens, and courtyards,” he said.
Under development by Nakheel, Dubai Waterfront is billed as the largest waterfront and manmade development in the world. The project is designed to create an international community accommodating 1.5 million people.
